The Sydney Architecture Festival (September 29 – October 1) this year features Dr Kristien Ring, who will be giving this year’s Global Oration – “From profit-driven to people-led housing for Sydney”. The Festival also features an exhibition of Missing Middle Design Competition winners.
In her key note speech Dr Ring will share a citizen-led housing model that offers greater choice and lower costs – one that fosters cohesive neighbourhoods and enables adaptable, customised living solutions.
Dr Ring’s people-led housing idea is based on the idea of baugruppen – German for “building group” – that stands for a long tradition of self-initiated, community-oriented living and the shared responsibility of building.
GANSW is particularly interested in innovative delivery and management models, such as baugruppen, generally but specifically in NSW how this could underpin medium density housing and smaller scale apartment blocks in NSW.
We are keen to explore whether it has the potential to impact on affordability but whether development of this type can also improve the:
- quality of design and construction
- environmental performance
- contribute to greater diversity of housing types; and
- better social outcomes for both existing and new communities
